Game 3: Paeng's (Coronado)

The series continues as game 3 was held at Paeng's beside Coronado Lanes in Makati.

Same strategy, different ending. I was already in front 7-2 when he stringed some racks together to cut it down to 8-7. I think I was too sleepy to concentrate that time. The 16th rack was already mine when I banked the nine but scratched on a miscalculated top left english. With the score tied at 8-8, Paeng's had to close since it was already 12:30am.

Game continued the next day at Eastwood where I then trailed 11-10 with him shooting a long pot for the rack and the game. Good thing it rattled out (thanks to all the distractions I made - dirty tactics hehe) and I got away with that one. With the game tied at 11-11 and my potting nowhere near accurate, the only way I could win this now was with a combo on the 9 and I did. A 3-9 combo to end the game.

It was a scrappy and ugly game... but a win's a win. :D

Sibling Rivalry At Its Best

I've lost 4 straight 9-ball heads up games against Pao including a meltdown last week at Eastwood where I was already up 7-3 but lost 8-10. I've won against him at Coronado last last Tuesday but that wasn't head to head - our uncle joined us for a challenge the winner format where I pulled off an 11-8-7 upset hehehe.

That Coronado game was historic too. It was the first time we saw some of the Philippine team members play at Coronado (though Django was just watching). It was also the first time that someone scratched the ceiling with a cue stick after a very animated break (hey I had to change something - it was 4 or 5 straight dry breaks at that time!). Check the ceiling. There's only one chalk mark there. Maybe I ought to sign that.

Anyway, here's my battle plan for our next game:

First is to play where I have the home court advantage. My favorite place. My favorite table. Skybowl Galleria - the table near the phone beside the window. This also happens to be the place where he's cursed. For some reason he plays differently in that place. Being back there brought back plenty of memories: recent and ancient - from my game against Myk a few months ago where I won 17-12 to my high school days while hanging out there with Steve, Arvie and the others.

Second is to switch to my best equipment. I used my old blue stick instead of my new brown one with a better tip but is kinda crooked. I also ditched my red chalk for a blue one. The cue sock "Mr Socko" stayed though.

Third is the actual game strategy. I know his strengths and limitations. This time, I should focus on attacking his weaknesses and straying away from his strengths.

Fourth is to hope for luck aka "The Force".

So how did it play out?

18-0... in my favor

*evil laugh*

Those 18 racks included 1 golden break and a fluke on the 9. The rest of the 16 racks were all strategy, good luck on my end and bad luck on his. It was one of the weirdest games ever. I should enjoy this while I still can. I know he'll be looking for payback next time.

Holy Sith!

WARNING: May contain spoilers!

I haven't been to a premier of a movie since Titanic I think.
The movie was great! I don't think it's the best of the six (I think Empire Strikes Back is still the best) but it should there in close second. Good thing we got good seats - center and way out in back.

Before the movie, I made some predictions on the movie just for fun. Let's see how I fared:

X 1. Han Solo's there with a small role.
/ 2. Obi Wan and Anakin fights. It will end with Obi Wan stabbing Anakin which puntures his lungs or something. (hence Darth's heavy breathing).
/ 3. Windu dies.
X 4. Yoda will have a cool fight scene. Yoda will win.
X 5. At the end of the movie, Darth's big ol' ship will chase Lea's small ship (the beginning scene of "A New Hope").
X 6. The lead villain (besides Darth Vader) will wield a new type of weapon.
X 7. C3P0 gets to kill someone.
X 8. Yoda displays a secret technique with the force.
X 9. Yoda fights Anakin. Anakin will almost win but then Yoda does #8.
/ 10. Every scene can be converted into a video game.

3 out of 10 ?!? It's like ROTC written exams all over again.

Classic talaga:

P: "Kambal anak ni Padme?"
A: "Yup. Hulaan mo kung sino yung isa."
P: "Chewbacca!"
...
P: "Sino yung foster father nya(Luke)? Si Han Solo?"

...haay...

by the way, super super super super super super thanks to Destry for continuing the migration scripts! :)

Watch Your Head

While at mass today, there was a lady a few seats to my left who passed out and crumpled to the floor. People quickly lifted her and placed her back into her seat while fanning her. Maybe it's the heat. She looked better after the mass though.

Scary. It reminded me suddenly of a similar incident (well... kinda) that happened a few months back.

At a nearby mall, an old lady in front of me didn't see a step after reaching the ground floor through an escalator and began to stumble forwards. Unfortunately, there was a second step that sent her falling head first with a big thud into the marble floor. So there I was standing with an unconscious old lady sprawled on the floor right in front of me. What do i do?!? How the heck am I supposed to know? I'm a systems analyst. You want me to inform her that her fall was very inefficient and she should have spun to the right instead to minimize the damage? You want me to come up with a documentation and give out a presentation as well? Ok, so I know squat about first aid... What I did was I looked for a security guard so he could radio in some help and probably a stretcher. I don't think it's safe to move her that time.

So did I do the correct thing? Here's what I found out from the Internet:

  • For minor injuries, put ice and monitor the patient.
  • For moderate to severe injuries, call for help.
  • Check the person's airway, breathing, and circulation. If necessary, begin rescue breathing and CPR.
  • If the person's breathing and heart rate are normal but the person is unconscious, treat as if there is a spinal injury. Stabilize the head and neck by placing your hands on both sides of the person's head, keeping the head in line with the spine and preventing movement. Wait for medical help.
  • Stop any bleeding by firmly pressing a clean cloth on the wound. If the injury is serious, be careful not to move the person's head. If blood soaks through the cloth, DO NOT remove it. Place another cloth over the first one.
  • If you suspect a skull fracture, DO NOT apply direct pressure to the bleeding site, and DO NOT remove any debris from the wound. Cover the wound with sterile gauze dressing.
  • If the person is vomiting, roll the head, neck, and body as one unit to prevent choking. This still protects the spine, which you must always assume is injured in the case of a head injury. (Children often vomit ONCE after a head injury. This may not be a problem, but call a doctor for further guidance.)
  • Apply ice packs to swollen areas.

"Yari sa LITERA"

... and here's one I passed for out LITERA (Introduction to Literature) class. I think I won myself an ethnic bracelet for this.

"YARI SA LITERA"
(Nov 20, 2001)

Nagpapahingang isip
Kumakain ng mamon
Cellphone ko'y biglang nag beep
Nagtext sa akin si Mon

Papatulong daw bukas
Bigla akong nataranta
Bukas pala ipapass
Ang tula sa LITERA!

Tungkol saan? Ilang line?
Di ko talaga alam
Dialed Deney, busy line!
Baka kausap si Pam

Next, tumawag kay Carla
"May I speak to Carla please?"
Dun ko lang naalala
Date sya ngayon sa Libis

Next, tinawagan si Bon
"May I speak to Richie please?
"Kausap ko'y tumugon"
He's with Carla sa Libis"

Patulong naman sana
Ang utak ko ay bugbog
Tumawag kay Diana
Kinana pa raw tulog

Yari na kami ni Mon
Baka ako malagot
Tinetext ko si Anton
Di naman sumasagot

Gawa na lang kung ano
Umupo at nagisip
Isang tulang mabango
Isang tulang pasipsip

"O ms. Santos kay galing"
ms. Santos Santos Santos
Santos... ako'y nailing
Walang ma-rhyme sa "Santos"

Bahala na bukas
Ang utak ko'y nagsara
Wala akong mapa-pass
'Tay na ko sa LITERA

"Gokongwei Theatre"

Hey, look what I've unearthed (from my ancient, hopelessly outdated website). It's my old college poetry! This is the one I wrote for the ComSci Newsletter:
"GOKONGWEI THEATRE"
(Dec 1, 2001)

May masasarap at meron ding mapakla
Porkchop ni Lito, may Mang Tomas at kanin
May taho, cheesedog at may baked mac ng er... tindera

Well, isa nanamang scene ang nag-end this term
Will things be worse, be same or will things be better?
Kaya't sa susunod na pagtapos ng term
Kita kita na lang sa Gokongwei theatre

Driving Stats

(another driving entry?!?)

On a boring Friday morning drive to work, what better way to spice things up that with useless stats on the way…

Attitude: Big Meanie
Top Speed: 105 km/h

Traffic: Moderate

Number of cars cut: 8

Cats ran over: 0/2 Filinvest cats are fast.

Dogs ran over: 0/0

Dirty fingers received: 1

Number of taxis driving with no left front tire: 1

Number of Traffic mishaps: 3 (2 collisions and one between a rolling tire and a van)

Ads (billboards): 107(more than half of it are the Nivea ads along C5)

Best Ad: All the ones related to food.

Most worthless Ad: “Norah Jones in Concert” at Libis.

Car I would love to drive instead: yellow Porsche in Forbes Park.

Car that would have been interesting to drive: MMDA water truck. (I’ve been playing too many firefighter

missions in Grand Theft Auto)

Car I was lucky I wasn’t driving: that taxi with no left front tire

Coolest thing I saw: (1) dancing cop at Forbes.

(2) driver of the van with no clue why a tire hit him on the right side.

Worst thing I saw: stage being set up in Ayala ave. (I’m already imagining the traffic this afternoon)

Traffic Can Be Fun

… and this is from a guy who also said expert systems are cool and useful.

Ok ok. I absolutely abhor traffic. The obvious reason is the time wasted. It takes me an hour and a half to get to work, then another two hours to get home both right smack through rush hour. That’s almost four hours down the drain every weekday. Then again, I’ve heard worse stories from my office mates so maybe I really shouldn’t complain.

The funny thing is that while sitting through traffic, you begin to notice how people behave and how the whole traffic system really works. Did you observe that the moment you turn on your signal lights the more they won’t let you pass? How about FX drivers’ “every inch counts” mentality wherein they move their vehicles forward trying to navigate through the traffic crevice during a red light? Women drivers? Oh wait, no, sorry, I don’t believe in “women drivers” or the saying “babae kasi”. I’ve encountered enough aggressive women drivers and wimpy men drivers to disprove that point.

How about the system? How come we need to have both traffic lights and a policeman in an intersection if all the cop does is give out the same signals? Oh right, traffic lights are sometimes just there as props. If ever it does matter, green means go, yellow means go fast, and red means go really fast. Lane markers are absolutely optional unless it was made of steel or concrete. Cops always camp around behind trees or behind traffic signs (so that if you start to complain they’ll just drag that sign up to your face) but you would admire their effort to flag down violating vehicles… yea right... I’ve seen more effort in me trying to wake up during “coding” day.

Maybe you could see a law abiding driver here or a good cop there but there’s just too few of them. Well, at least there’s no speeding! I love the Libis stretch from the Eastwood U-turn all the way to the flyover. My record is 138 Km/h there – I almost hyperextended my elbow when I whipped my arm out.

I still wish we had holy week traffic all year.
